Technology description
This 200m2 residential house in
Derio-Bizkaia (near Bilbao) uses an absorption heat pump in conjunc-tion
with solar panels to meet all its cooling needs, while an oil-fired
boiler provides back-up heating during winter. During the summer (mainly
in June, July and August) the system runs in cooling mode, while in
winter the absorption chiller operates in reverse (heat pump mode) to
provide heat in winter (December, January, February and March). Sanitary
hot water is required all year round and is met by a combination of the
solar thermal system and the oil-fired boiler.
Basic information regarding the case study
The
heat for the absorption chiller is provided by a solar thermal system
comprised of heat pipe vacuum tubes panels (and an oil-fired boiler as
an auxiliary system when needed for heating and sanitary hot water) that
is used for sanitary hot water, space heating and cooling (see figure
below). The solar cooling system comprises a Climatewell absorption
chiller (closed cycle) using a lithium-chloride solution. The chilling
capacity of the system is 10 kW with 50 kWh internal energy storage
capacity (hot water, 0.6 m3), with a nominal driving heat temperature
of 70-75 °C. The heat rejection system consists of a large 30 m3
storage tank with natural water, which is used for irrigation and
refilled by rain. The system doesn’t use a cooling tower. Cooling is distributed at 15°C and no dehumidification is provided. The
system uses a radiant floor system to distribute heat and cooling.
